Welcome to my writing room! Shoes off, please :)
My name is Sazié. I am a singer, songwriter, flutist, and lifelong music student.
I am a musical voyager on a long journey to learn more about music, from theory to the inner workings of the industry and business to discovering new instruments. I am making my own apprenticeship, learning more about traditional music in different countries, and always diving into the catalogs of the classics for the first time. I also love (re)discovering more contemporary genres and styles from around the world and in different languages. You can catch a glimpse of my musical voyages on this website as I’ll be mapping out those explorations, sharing all my creations and collaborations, and publishing some of my reflections on my vocal ancestry and musical heritage in my articles.
I am a lyrical forager. I am always captivated by songwriters who manage to tell intriguing stories packaged in a beautiful and/or addictive melody. The potent combination of melody and lyrics has moved me to tears, raised my heart rate, and held me in a trance as I rinse a song on repeat. As a creative writer, I seek to use every literary tool in English (my first language) and storytelling devices from the other languages in my life (mainly French, Kiswahili, Lusoga, and Luganda) to induce these effects in my listeners.
I am a musical student and collaborator. I must confess, I wasn’t born playing the flute or singing like I do now. In this life, I have been fortunate to have so many teachers and classmates who have helped me learn, motivated me with their skills, or stoked my love and excitement for music through our shared joy of music. While I have spent several hours practicing alone in a room somewhere, my identity as a musician is inseparable from my collaborations: years spent with my teachers, studying and performing with friends and fellow music lovers, all my accompaniments, and my participation in ensembles, choirs, and orchestras through the years. That is what my musical surname Nabiryamba represents - recognizing the historical and future collaborations that blend to make the unique sound wave behind every note I have ever and will ever produce.
Yours truly,
Sazié
